AC Transit Receives California Energy Commission Funding Award
AC Transit has been awarded more than $4.5 million to upgrade the District’s Hydrogen Fueling infrastructure at its East Oakland Bus Division by the California Energy Commission. The award was given in response to a 2020 grant solicitation for zero-emission transit fleet infrastructure deployment as a part of California’s Clean Transportation Program.
The District scored competitively on its proposal, and awaited funding approved by Governor Newsom through Senate Bill 129, which allocated funds to bus transit agencies geared to accelerate the deployment of zero-emission transit buses and infrastructure on July 12, 2021. AC Transit will use this grant funding to solidify AC Transit as a market-leader in zero-emission bus deployment and provide better air quality to the neighborhoods surrounding the East Oakland Division as well as neighborhoods served by buses operating out of the Division. Improvements from the funding award will include:
- Expand capacity for on-site liquid hydrogen storage
- Increase hydrogen throughput with a new liquid hydrogen compression system
- Implementation of a resiliency infrastructure to ensure continuous electrical supply
- Replacement of existing hydrogen station equipment
Other agencies receiving funding include the North County Transit District, Culver City, and the Valley Transit Authority (VTA).
