The public depends on AC Transit to provide safe, reliable, and frequent transit for essential livelihood connections to work, education, and healthcare, but climate change and extreme weather can impact operations, disrupt service and inconvenience riders.

We’re excited to share that AC Transit was awarded a Caltrans HQ grant to develop a Climate Resilience Plan. It is a strategy to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to the impacts of climate change and extreme weather events.

AC Transit wants your input to help us evaluate how changes in rainstorms, extreme heat, wind, wildfires, sea level rise, etc. impact your ride and transit experience as well as our bus route network, fleet, and the well-being of our employees.

Goals

  • Identify vulnerabilities to AC Transit's network, facilities, and operations from extreme weather events and climate change
  • Evaluate potential risks associated with climate change (financial, social, environmental)
  • Develop customized adaptation strategies, to improve climate resilience
  • Provide a roadmap and framework for short-, medium-, and long-term solutions
  • Establish regional collaboration efforts to build climate resiliency in transit
  • Minimize negative impacts of climate change on bus service to equity priority communities

Benefits

  • Better prepared to adapt to extreme weather events and a changing climate to ensure business continuity
  • Higher community and agency awareness of climate change impacts to the transportation network
  • Ability to integrate climate resilience into operations and development decisions
  • Regional collaboration could potentially result in a pooled resources to reduce risks, and help organizations adapt to changing conditions
